Day 6 - Lebanon MO to Chandler OK (via Kansas) 339 miles (868 miles so far)

I've not added photos for today or yesterday cos the internet connection isnt very strong and it keeps timing out, I will add them tomor hopefully.

Today was a ROASTING day, sitting at about 30c all day, which in a car is almost unbearable.

We slept in a bit so decided to hop on the interstate til after Springfield, we were glad we did though as we came upon a massive gift store called Ozark Village which was tacky as a tack in tackland. We were listening to Swapline on a local radio station, it was amazing, people were calling in giving their home telephone number and offering to sell stuff from lifejackets to houses to guns!!

Our first stop of the day was at Carthage which was a lovely wee town with a square arranged around a courthouse. We had lunch in the Carthage Deli and Soda Fountain where the last 50 years did not happen. We each had sandwich melts for lunch (K with turkey me with beef) and I had a cherry italian soda and k had a root beer. One of the booths was a whole car!

Then we went into Kansas, only 13miles of Rt 66 go through Kansas but they make them all count, we saw van like Mater from Cars which even had eyes put in it. We stopped at a really old fashioned store in Riverton where we got some souveniers for you guys!

Next, we were into Oklahoma, we went through loads of cute towns but the first place we stopped was a tiny cafe called The Top Hat in Foyil where we got some Shakes to try to cool us down and then headed up to the Totem Pole Park which was pretty cool, the main Totem Pole was massive. As we wanted to cover a lot of ground today we powered on til we got to the Blue Whale in Catoosa which used to be a water park, you will understand when i upload pictures.

We then encountered our first problem of the day which was trying to get into Tulsa, we eventually found the right way and it was a very pretty city but we didnt hang about. We stopped at Dan's Bar-B-Q Pit for dinner and I had amazing pulled pork with coleslaw and a baked potato, K had chicken fried steak with coleslaw with mash and coleslaw but she wasnt loving the chicken, the lesson being 'when in a proper bbq joint, order bbq'.

Finally we arrived in Chandler where we checked into the very old Lincoln Inn, the room is nice and massive but there were some ants on the bathroom wall so we are super paranoid.

We have had a great time so far, it is weird being somewhere so different than you are used to. We have seen about a million dead armadillos by the side of the road, they must be very stupid and there must be loads of them.

  1. Just to make you feel good, and not just a little smug. The temp here might reach 10 today. It's blowing a gale and we even had a few hailstones last night. Keep having the juice, would hate to think you were risking scurvy. Big Loves x
